Indian Hospitals Foundation Engagement

On June 24, 2025, the Federal Court approved a Settlement Agreement that addresses claims of abuse that occurred while Indigenous people were patients in 33 former “Indian Hospitals”, as they were known at the time.

As part of the Settlement Agreement, an Indigenous-led Foundation will be established to support Survivors, former patients and their families with activities related to healing, wellness, reconciliation, research, education, and commemoration for the hospitals.

Soon we will be launching an extensive cross-Canada engagement process in over 40 locations. This Indigenous-led process will seek guidance and input from Survivors and former patients of Indian Hospitals, as well as their families, on the creation of the Foundation. Please check back regularly for new information and resources, as well as the launch of the registration process to participate in an in-person session.

In the meantime, please feel free to send us an email (info@ihfes.ca) to show your interest in participating and we will be sure to contact you as soon as the process is fully active.

Trigger warning: Some people may be triggered by discussions related to the former Indian Hospitals. Your well-being is important to us.
